Welcome to Pilates

A method of body conditioning using a system of strengthening and stretching exercises which was developed by Joseph Pilates over 90 years ago and based on the fundamentals of Breathing, control, centring, concentration, fluidity and precision. It has a holistic approach to health which is a technique taught through body awareness with a fusion of the mind and body in a relaxed and balanced way of moving while helping to alleviate any stress and tension.

Pilates is a form of gentle yet powerful exercise with a strong emphasis placed on the lower and deeper abdominals, buttocks and mid-back muscles. These areas are the  primary control centres of the body. If you think about how you sit and stand you will probably realise that most of your weight sinks into this part of your body. Stabilising the deeper muscles of the torso allows the extremities to move freely from an aligned and stable spine, providing support for the lower back and improving abdominal control while increasing flexibility and strength at the same time. This can then encourage better postural alignment enabling you to stand and sit straighter and taller and may help to ease some of those everyday aches and pains which may be symptoms of today’s sedentary lifestyle.
